Man Up to Cancer, North America’s leading support community for men facing cancer, is honored to partner with the Johnson family of Berlin, Conn., on the Scott Johnson Memorial Fund.

The fund raises money to provide travel assistance for members of the Man Up to Cancer community who want to attend the group’s annual retreat, the Gathering of Wolves.

The fund is named in honor of Scott Johnson, a family man, firefighter, and U.S. Coast Guard veteran who passed away from cancer in 2017 at the age of 46.

“As a family, we have been proactive in finding ways to honor Scott and his legacy since his passing,” said his widow, Caroline Lukasiewicz Johnson. “This fund makes a huge difference in the lives of so many men who are facing cancer with courage and tenacity, just as Scott did. He would have loved to attend this retreat with other men from all around the country and the world.”

Caroline manages the fund along with her and Scott’s three sons: Zackary, 15, and twins Jacob and Benjamin, 11.

Trevor Maxwell, a stage IV cancer patient and founder of Man Up to Cancer, said this fund is a game-changer for the Gathering of Wolves retreat.

“Once our members get to Camp Duffield, everything is free, thanks to our sponsors. But we don’t have the money to pay for members’ travel,” Maxwell said. “This fund makes it possible for guys to attend who otherwise would not be able to make it. As we all know, the financial burden of cancer is heavy, I’m incredibly grateful to Caroline and the boys for this partnership.”

A message from Caroline…

“Seven years ago the word Cancer changed our world and still to this day, that word rocks me to my core. My name is Caroline Johnson. I am a mother, daughter, cancer advocate and widow.

My husband was New Britain Firefighter and Chief Petty Officer Scott Johnson. Scott was diagnosed with Stage IV Colorectal on April 29, 2015 and succumbed to this deadly disease on August 16, 2017. For the last seven years I have been working tirelessly with FightCRC to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure for the cancer that took my late husband.

To date, we have raised a little over $30,000 and we are far from done. This all began when my oldest son decided that for his 8th birthday he was going to forgo gifts and asked that I find an organization online to help find a cure for this father. That is how our relationship with Fight CRC evolved and is still going strong.

Every April, with the help of the New Britain Fire Department, we have a Memorial 5K race in Scott's honor where again, all proceeds go to FightCRC.

It is hugely important for my three sons to know that their father died a hero and that the legacy he has left behind will be something that is talked about for years to come. Scott's story even made national news as I was invited as a guest to the State of the Union by Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy to discuss the importance of early detection, screenings and reducing the age restriction for colonoscopies .

We did not choose cancer, cancer for some reason chose us. These past few years have not been easy, but I do believe that if Scott were here today, he would be proud of the legacy that is unfolding.”
